Recent statistics have shown that between 1997 and 2007, 59 children under the age of 16 were killed in crashes when a safety belt or child car seat was not being used. Accidents can happen at any time, so it’s essential to buckle up no matter how short the journey. In the same period, an additional 90 pedestrians under 14 were killed. With your help we are confident that we can continue to decrease the number of deaths and injuries on the roads.
Every weekday in Ireland, at least 100,000 primary school children walk to school. To keep them safe, it’s important that they know how to be seen on the streets, whether it’s wearing bright clothing or crossing at a safe place. Following the RSA recommendations can help us continue to decrease the number of pedestrian fatalities.
Seatbelt Sheriff
The Seatbelt Sheriff is a fun way to get children involved in saving lives on the road. Children in first class become Seatbelt Sheriffs by taking a pledge to wear their safety belt and make sure that everyone else in the car is buckled up, too. They can flash their new sheriff’s badge and certificate so everyone they’re travelling with knows that they must wear their safety belt.
Hi Glo Silver
After becoming honorary Seatbelt Sheriff’s in first class, Hi Glo Silver will encourage second class students to wear bright clothing when they are out walking or cycling. They will pledge to wear jackets, armbands or belts and remind their parents to do the same. As with the Seatbelt Sheriff, students will receive a certificate that gives them the power to instruct everyone they walk or cycle with to wear
safety gear.
The Seatbelt Sheriff and Hi Glo Silver are also the focus of schools competitions.
